The Music Of Kathy Ingraham
The Oscar winning short film from 1943 Heavenly Music is the genesis of my new fourth jazz album “Jazz Dreams “. I wanted to further demonstrate this films theory that a great melody can transcend the genre in which it was originally created. So the catalyst had a second tweek while watching a replay video of Howard Stern’s birthday bash in which Steve Tyler performed Dream On at the piano. In the middle of an instrumental interlude, he sang four measures of what I heard as jazz. It was a morsel of scatting that lit up my brain. Hence, my jazz interpretation of the iconic rock song Dream On was born. The first of my latest 7 song album of songs re-imagined in my jazz dreams. The songs include Eli’s Comin by Laura Nyro, Stairway To Heaven by Led Zepplin, the iconic House of The Rising Sun which musicologists have traced its possible origins to English broadside ballads and even 17th-century folk songs or a more well known version by the Animals in 1964, Arrowsmith’s Dream On, Ruby Tuesday by The Rolling Stones, Melusina, a song about my ancestry and lastly my own Little Things that was featured in the 2019 Johnny Depp movie “The Professor” in which it was performed as a retro 1950’s song. I have taken this opportunity to record it in my jazz genre. This album is quite special to me because my beautiful daughter Lily is doing the backing vocals. How cool is that? Also appearing are Pete Levin, Randy Brecker, Evan Christopher, William Galison, Joel Rosenblatt , Elliott Randall, Matt Wensor and Lily Del Rosso.
In my third album “Everlasting Cool” I decided I wanted to pay homage to some great jazz standards and this is for a few different reasons. One is to honor the composers. That fact that so many artists have recorded these songs so often speaks to the beauty of the songs. I am a composer so for me it is always song first. The other reason is that I grew up listening to this music and knew all the songs by heart by the time I became a teenager. Then in high school I got a job singing jazz on the waterfront in Portland Maine at a little Italian restaurant DiMillo’s. I would sing during the cocktail hour. My sister’s husband Steve Barnes was a Berklee College of music graduate and was an amazing guitarist so we put a small band together. The songs I have chosen to honor are just cool….Everlasting Cool.
My 2nd jazz album Paper Doll had a July 2020 release. Tracks arranged by jazz icon Pete Levin featuring New Orleans treasure Evan Christopher on Clarinet (Stardust and Abeille), Joel Rosenblatt on drums, Pete Levin on keyboards and bass. I have also included a new scat version of “Thats What Crazy Lovers Do”, (Open the PDF booklet and scat along with me!)”Seraphina Come Spring” featuring an amazing trumpet solo by Don Harris and a really unorthodox jazz/blues album version of the classic “Nature Boy” with Elliott Randall on guitar and Pete Levin on keyboard. The album version of Cherish includes the dulcimer flute coolness of Erik Lawrence.
My single “Little Things” was released June 1 2019. It is a retro 60’s pop song that is currently in the Johnny Depp movie “The Professor”. Thank you for all the wonderful messages I receive from you on FB and emails! I hope my music continues to resonate with you. Thanks for the love! Peace out. Kathy
